Human history is replete with examples of comic book-style pictorial storytelling, where scrolling and sequential narratives are used to tell epic stories of superhuman beings.

From the action packed lion-hunt reliefs of ancient Mesopotamia, the rhythmic processions of the Parthenon frieze in ancient Athens and the captivating tales of the Buddha’s former lives depicted in ancient India and China, human beings have long used pictures to communicate their greatest stories.

This panel discussion unites different British Museum curators to chart this phenomenon with reference to what makes compelling visual storytelling.

Chaired by international comics expert Paul Gravett, the panel will include curators from across the Museum including Curator of the Citi exhibition Manga マンガ, Nicole Rousmaniere; Curator of Early Chinese Collections, Yi Chen; and Assistant Keeper of Ancient Mesopotamian script, languages and cultures, Irving Finkel, who was immortalised in the manga comic Professor Munakata's British Museum Adventure.
