The sudden collapse of the Assyrian Empire around 612 BC, just some 15 years after the death of Ashurbanipal in 627 BC, remains poorly understood.

Following Ashurbanipal's death, Assyrian authority weakened, as his two sons competed for power. This lecture by John MacGinnis, British Museum, explores the documentary and archaeological evidence for the collapse and the sack of the royal capitals.
