In March 1869, Henry Layard, discoverer of ancient Assyria, married Enid Guest, daughter of Lady Charlotte Schreiber and 25 years his junior.

From then on, his young wife kept meticulous diaries, recording every gift of jewellery received and every purchase made. While her archaeologist husband gave her jewels made up of ancient Assyrian seals or Roman coins, this lecture reconstructs her lost collection to reveal what she really loved most and how she wore it.
