The naturalism of the lions in the famous stone reliefs of Ashurbanipal has long been admired in Assyrian art although the apparent cruelty to the animals has not.

Such an understanding, however, misses the meaning of the reliefs since they were carefully designed by the king and his scholars to ensure that evil was punished and the correct order of the universe achieved.

In this lecture, Paul Collins, University of Oxford, discusses the cultural context of these intricately carved palace reliefs.
