Frequently asked questions about tickets

How can I book in advance?

Tickets for exhibitions and events can be purchased online via our website: , by telephone +44 (0)20 7323 8181 (open daily 09.00 – 17.00), and at the Ticket Desk in the Museum’s Great Court (until 45 minutes before the gallery closure times).

How far in advance of visiting do I need to buy a ticket?

Advance booking is strongly recommended as many of our exhibitions and events prove very popular and advance availability can sell-out. You can purchase tickets for exhibitions and events online and via phone up to 24 hours before your visit. After that time you will need to buy your tickets at the Museum (subject to availability).

As a Member, do I have to buy a ticket?

As a Member you are entitled to free entry to Museum exhibitions. You can present your Membership card at the exhibition entrance to gain immediate access during regular opening times. Please be aware, Members may be asked to collect a ticket for entry at a later time the same day to some special exhibitions during peak times (such as lunchtimes and weekends)

For Museum events Members do need to book individual tickets at a concessionary rate.

Are tickets timed?

All tickets for exhibitions are timed with 10 minute entry slots. Please arrive at the exhibition entrance at the time on your ticket. You will not be able to enter the exhibition before this time. Last entry for exhibitions is normally 70 minutes before the gallery closes.

Are tickets available on the day?

For exhibitions a limited number of tickets for each day will be available to purchase at the Ticket Desk in the Great Court. They are likely to sell out quickly so come early to avoid disappointment. You may also need to wait between your ticket purchase and your timed exhibition entry.

For events there is no daily ticket allocation held back but if the event has not already sold-out then any remaining tickets can still be purchased on the day from the Ticket Desk.

Please note that tickets for the same day are not available to buy online or by telephone.

How do e-tickets work when booking online?

If you book online you will receive an e-mail confirmation which contains within it a link to download your e-tickets. Please bring the e-tickets with you to gain entry on the day. You can print the e-tickets out or display them on your device.

If your ticket was purchased at a discount or concession, please bring valid identification. Tickets cannot be exchanged or refunded.

Where do I collect my tickets after booking via telephone?

All tickets booked for exhibitions can be collected from the entrance to that specific exhibition on the day.

All tickets for Museum events (lectures/films/special events) can be collected from the Ticket Desk in the Museum’s Great Court on the day.

To collect tickets on the day please bring the booking reference number which you will be given at the time of booking.

Am I able to exchange or refund my tickets?

Tickets are non-refundable and non-exchangeable.

However, at our discretion we can exchange some exhibition tickets, providing we have availability and you are able to let us know in advance the date and time slot that tickets are valid for. We are not able to exchange tickets which are valid for past dates or time slots.
