Christ presented to the people; Ecce Homo; Pontius Pilate standing on a dais and surrounded by soldiers at left, pointing at Christ on his right side, the gaoler between them, a crowd gathered in front; on the far left side of the dais, holding a jug of water and a large bowl in which Pilate will shortly (and literally) 'wash his hands' of the affair, people leaning from the windows and doorways of the surrounding buildings; oblong plate; sixth state with the figures standing in the foreground in front of the tribune burnished away and the ground on which they stood lowered beyond the bottom of the plate, with other areas extensively reworked, such as the arch behind Pilate and Christ, before the signature and date have been added. 1655
