Kitaj first met the artist David Hockney at the Royal College of Art in 1960. Kitaj recalled their first meeting: 'a young man with large glasses and short black hair who began our first week to make the finest drawings of the human figure I had seen in any school'. The pair became lifelong friends. Kitaj made this portrait of Hockney and his then partner Peter Schlesinger when he was in California in 1968. Kitaj and Hockney were both teaching a Berkeley that year.
