Young Friends Volunteers

We are looking for enthusiastic people to support the Young Friends programme at the British Museum. This is an exciting volunteer role where you will help create an unforgettable experience for children aged 8-15 years as they stay overnight at the Museum, participating in craft workshops, activities and storytelling events.

The role will include

  • Meeting and greeting Young Friends and their families and showing them to their sleeping area in the Museum galleries.
  • Assisting families with a wide range of creative activities.
  • Supporting staff throughout the event.
  • Staying overnight at the Museum.

How the role is organised

  • The schedule for each year’s sleepover programme is sent out on an annual basis.
  • Volunteers are asked nominate their preferred dates and the different sleepovers are then shared out between the volunteer team. You may also be contacted about specific sleepovers closer to the time.
  • You will be sent further information in advance of each sleepover for which you have signed up.

What we would like from you

  • We ask that volunteers offer to help with at least 3 sleepovers each year.
  • Volunteers will be required to complete an enhanced DBS check through the Museum.
  • Volunteers will be required to attend safeguarding training provided by the Museum.
  • Volunteers will need to bring their own sleeping bag, ground mat and pillow to each sleepover.

What you can expect from us

  • To be involved in a fun, interactive programme that encourages the Museum’s younger audiences to explore world cultures and history.
  • To receive training in safeguarding and about the Young Friends programme.
  • To meet other volunteers and to become part of the British Museum volunteer team.
